Andrew W Smith

Andrew W. Smith is a developer, designer, and writer. His work brings immersive and interactive technologies such as games, archival and interpretive websites, digital collage, AR, and VR into conversation with topics such as memory, environmental futures, Black life, and virtual worlds. His work has appeared in Urgency Reader 2, The New River, and SUPERJUMP. His recent projects include Anti-Temporal Letters, Solidarity Book Project, and Energy CG.

He is a research fellow and graduate assistant with the University of Maryland’s (UMD) African-American Digital Humanities center (AADHum). He is pursuing a Masters of Science in Human Computer Interaction at UMD’s iSchool (HCIM). His work is supported by the Immersive Realities Lab for the Humanities (irLh), where he has been a team member creating digital projects since 2016. Previously he was the Communications Fellow at Amherst College during the 2019-2020 academic year. Andrew works at the intersection of creative practices, digital technology, and scholarly research. His current projects consider memory, Afrofuturism, photography, and speculative fiction. His technological skill set includes game design, web development, VR/AR development, and audio/visual production. He is a sometimes hobbyist, sometimes professional photographer and musician. Andrew is an alumni of Amherst College where he majored in Political Science and graduated in May 2018. He is also a graduate of the International Baccalaureate Program where he received his IB Diploma in May 2014.
